Veal schnitzel is a dish that’s a lot of fun to make.
You can find it at almost any restaurant in the world, but it’s also one of those things that makes your home kitchen feel like an actual restaurant.
Veal schnitzel is basically just breaded and fried meat—usually veal or chicken breast—and you can serve it with just about anything.
It’s great for when you want to treat yourself to a nice meal at home, or if you’re trying to impress someone with your cooking skills.
But what do you serve with veal schnitzel?
The best sides to serve with veal schnitzel are potatoes and other starchy vegetables. These will help soak up the juices from the veal, making it a great choice for anyone who enjoys a bit of sauce with their meal. For example, you can serve it with a potato salad or a green salad.
In this article, I’ve got 21 delicious side dishes for you!
What to Serve with Veal Schnitzel?
The most common sides to serve with veal schnitzel are potatoes, pasta, and rice.
When making potatoes, you can either boil them or bake them in the oven.
You can also make mashed potatoes by mashing boiled potatoes or baking potatoes with butter and milk.
Pasta is another common side dish for veal schnitzel.
You can boil it or make it in the oven, too. You can also add pesto sauce for extra flavor.
Rice is another popular side for veal schnitzel.
You can boil or bake it as well as add cheese or butter to make it more flavorful.

Roasted Root Vegetables
Veal schnitzel is often served with a side of potatoes or other starchy vegetables.
If you want to mix things up, try roasting some root vegetables and serving them alongside your schnitzel.
This is an especially good option if you’re making this dish for a special occasion (like Thanksgiving!) because it’s easy to make a lot of the same side and have leftovers for other meals throughout the week.
Green Salad
A green salad is a great option for any meal, and it’s especially good with schnitzel because it adds some color contrast to the plate.
You can easily make your own dressing from scratch or use store-bought dressing (though homemade will probably taste better).
Noodles
Noodles are one of my favorite sides, because they soak up all the delicious juices from the schnitzel and leave you feeling refreshed without weighing you down.
They’re also easy to prepare, which makes them perfect for weeknight dinners!
Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are another great option if you’re looking for something simple but effective.
They’re rich and creamy, which makes them perfect for soaking up all those tasty juices from your veal schnitzel.
Plus, they’re easy enough to whip up in the microwave or on the stovetop in under 15 minutes!
Celery Root Mash
Celery root mash is an easy choice for me because it’s just so versatile—it goes great with just about any meat, but especially meat that’s been breaded and fried.
The texture of celery root is also very similar to potatoes, which makes it a great substitute in recipes where you would otherwise use mashed potatoes.
It’s not overpowering like other vegetables might be if they’re paired with something like veal schnitzel.
Potato Salad
Potato salad is another common side dish option.
It’s usually made with potatoes (or a mashed potato mix), hard-boiled eggs, pickles, onion, mayonnaise or mustard dressing; but you can also add peas or corn kernels if you like!
Sweet Potato Fries
Sweet potato fries are a great way to add some color and texture to your meal, while still keeping it simple and classic.
The sweet potatoes give your meal a little bit of sweetness, which goes great with the savory flavor of the schnitzel.
They also have a nice crunchy texture that contrasts well with the soft, tender meat.
Regular French Fries
If you prefer something more traditional, regular french fries are another option that will be sure to satisfy.
They have all the same benefits as sweet potato fries—they’re colorful and flavorful!
So if you’re looking for something just like Mom used to make… well, this is it!
Beet Salad
The sweet and salty flavors of this dish are a perfect complement to the meatiness of your main course.
I love the contrast between the earthy beets and the nutty, crunchy almonds.
This is a great side dish for any meal, but especially one as rich in flavor as a schnitzel!
Rice Pilaf
You can’t go wrong with a classic like rice pilaf.
It’s easy to make, and it goes well with almost anything—including this course!
If you want something a little lighter than beets or potatoes, this is a good choice for you—and if you want something a little heartier than just rice or bread (which can sometimes seem too plain), then this will be perfect for you as well!
Lettuce Salad
A simple lettuce salad is always a good choice to go with a schnitzel.
The lettuce adds a freshness to the dish and also helps to cut through some of the richness of the meat.
You could even add some tomatoes or cucumbers if you want an extra crunch!
Hasselback Potatoes
Hasselback potatoes are one of my favorite sides because they’re so easy to make!
They’re basically just baked potatoes with slices cut into them so that they look like little boats—and if that sounds difficult to do, don’t worry about it!
All you need is a sharp knife and a little patience; it’s really not as hard as it looks!
Just be careful not to cut yourself while you’re slicing away!
Soup
You can’t go wrong with soup.
A nice creamy broth will complement the veal and give it some extra flavor and texture.
Try making your own stock from scratch, or use a good brand-name chicken noodle soup for convenience (it’s worth the extra cost to me).
Spaghetti
Spaghetti is another great option because it’s super easy to make and can be served with a number of different sauces.
Plus, spaghetti pairs nicely with veal because the sauce will help cut down on any richness from the meat and balance out the dish as a whole.
Steamed Broccoli or Asparagus
Steamed broccoli or asparagus are both easy additions to your meal that will help round out a dish that is already incredibly hearty and filling.
The veal itself is already so filling that you probably won’t need much more than a side dish or two to round out the meal.
Pasta Salad
Pasta salad is also incredibly versatile and can be made with just about any type of pasta and any combination of vegetables, herbs, and spices you like.
It’s a great option if you want something light but filling at the same time—and it also goes well with almost anything else on the menu!
Cabbage Salad
This is the perfect side for veal schnitzel.
It’s light and refreshing, which is exactly what you want when you’re enjoying a meal like this.
It’s also easy to make and doesn’t take much time at all.
All you have to do is prepare it ahead of time so that you can enjoy it with your veal schnitzel.
You can also make it in large batches so that you have some left over for later in the week!
Tomato Salad
If you like tomatoes and want something with a little kick to it, this tomato salad is perfect for you!
It has just enough heat from the peppers and onion to give it some kick without overpowering the other flavors of the dish.
This dish goes well with many kinds of meals, including meaty ones like veal schnitzel!
Brussels Sprouts
I love Brussels sprouts!
They’re so good, especially if you toss them in some balsamic vinegar and then roast them.
They come out nice and crispy, but still have a little bit of chew to them.
They’re also really easy to make!
- You just need to cut off the ends of each sprout, trim the stems off, and then cut them in half lengthwise.
- Then throw them on a baking sheet with some olive oil and salt, mix it up real good so they’re all coated evenly with oil, then stick ’em in the oven at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes until they’re nice and browned on top.
Caramelized Onions
These onions just go great with so many things—you’ll want to make sure you have plenty around when serving this dish!
They’re best made by slicing up some red onions and cooking them over medium heat with a little bit of oil until they start turning golden brown—then add some balsamic vinegar and let them simmer for another 15 minutes or so.
Homemade Coleslaw
This is a side that can be served with pretty much anything, but I especially love it with a schnitzel.
The combination of sweet and tart flavors, as well as the crunchy texture from the cabbage, works so well with the soft texture of veal. It’s also super easy to make at home!
All you need is a head of cabbage, some salt and pepper, mayonnaise and lemon juice.
Just mix everything together in a bowl until it’s well combined, then add more lemon juice if needed.
That’s it!
Bread Rolls
A good bread roll can really take a dish up a notch.
Schnitzel is already delicious on its own—but if you serve it with homemade bread rolls, which are soft and warm (and sometimes even slightly sweet), it will just make your meal feel like something special.
And I promise that once you try this recipe for yourself, you’ll never buy store-bought rolls again!
