8 Sauces that Go with Chickpea Pasta
I love pasta, but I love it, even more, when it’s made of chickpeas. It’s a healthy option that tastes delicious and is packed full of protein.
But the thing is, without sauce, it can be kind of boring.
So, here are my 8 favorite sauces to use with chickpea pasta—and yes, they all work great!
Let’s start with probably my favorite: pesto.
Pesto is one of the easiest recipes out there because it just uses a few ingredients and takes less than 10 minutes to make.
You can use any kind of pasta or even zoodles if you want, but it’s especially good on penne or rotini pasta (see also these easy rotini pasta recipes).
- Just mix the basil leaves, pine nuts (or walnuts), garlic clove (you can also use garlic powder if you don’t have fresh garlic), salt, pepper and olive oil together in a food processor until everything’s smooth.
- Then add a little bit of water if needed—just enough so that it’s not too thick or dry—and enjoy!
2. Marinara sauce
I also like to use marinara sauce as a base for my chickpea pasta.
It’s easy to make and can be spiced up to your liking—you can add mushrooms, green peppers, onions, or anything else you want!
I usually mix this sauce with some cooked chickpeas, tomatoes, and spices to make a delicious meal that’s ready in less than 20 minutes.
The best part is that all the ingredients are things you probably already have in your pantry!
Tip: If you’re feeling lazy but still want something tasty, try using store-bought marinara instead of making it yourself!
3. Alfredo sauce
I love to make Alfredo sauce with fresh herbs, like basil and parsley, but you can definitely use dried herbs if you don’t have access to fresh ones.
This recipe is super simple:
- Just heat up your milk or cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it starts to bubble at the edges, then whisk in your butter and seasonings.
- After that, just pour it over your pasta (or whatever else) and enjoy!
If you want to make this into a complete meal, you could also add some veggies or meat before serving.
4. Chili sauce
Chili sauce is just delicious.
It’s made from fresh ingredients like garlic, onion, and tomatoes—and it has just enough spice to make your mouth tingle!
Chili sauce is perfect for savory dishes like pasta because it adds some heat without being overpowering or spicy.
I like to pair my chili sauce with chickpea pasta so that I can have a warm and filling meal without any meat or dairy products.
You can always add extra ingredients if you’re feeling adventurous—for example, if you want to add meatballs!
Just make sure that whatever you add goes well with the flavor of your chili sauce.
This is an amazing meal for anyone looking for something filling and healthy but still flavorful.
5. Bolognese sauce
This sauce is one of my absolute favorites for chickpea pasta.
I love the creamy texture and the way the flavors blend together.
It’s also a great base for lots of other dishes, so if you don’t want to use it just with pasta, feel free to experiment with different vegetables and spices!
I like to make this recipe into a meal by adding some roasted veggies and chickpeas.
The chickpeas add some protein while also soaking up some of the sauce’s flavor.
I usually cook them in a separate pan so that they don’t take away from the main dish—they’re easy enough to cook on their own!
They’ll be done when they’re soft enough to bite through easily.
If you want to make this sauce even richer and creamier, try adding Nutritional Yeast (or another powder) into your bolognese.
This will give it an extra-cheesy taste without using any dairy products—which is perfect for those following a vegan or vegetarian diet!
6. Ranch dressing
Ranch dressing is a creamy sauce that’s full of flavor and is made from simple ingredients that are common in most kitchens.
It’s a great topping for any dish, but especially paired with chickpea pasta because it’s so easy to make and it makes your dish feel special.
The first step in making this dish is cooking the pasta.
You can either do this on the stove or in the microwave, whichever you prefer.
Once they’re done, drain them and set aside while you make your sauce.
- To make this sauce, put all of the ingredients (except for the salt and pepper) into a bowl and mix until they are combined well.
- Add salt and pepper to taste once everything has been mixed together.
- Then pour over your cooked noodles and enjoy!
If you want to turn this into a complete meal, add some protein such as chicken or beef to your dish before adding the ranch dressing mixture on top so that everything gets nice and juicy during cooking time!
7. Cilantro Lime Sauce
I like to make this sauce with a blender.
It’s quick, easy, and you can do it all in one bowl!
Just dump everything in and mix until you get the consistency you want.
You can add more or less water depending on how thick or thin you want your sauce to be.
To make a complete meal out of this recipe, I simply cook up some veggies (like zucchini) until they’re tender and then add them right into my blender with the rest of the ingredients for my sauce.
Then, once everything is blended together, I pour it over my chickpea pasta and serve!
Tip: If you don’t have fresh cilantro on hand but still want to use it in your recipe, try substituting fresh parsley instead!
8. Tahini Sauce
I love tahini sauce.
It’s creamy and delicious, and I like to use it as a base for pretty much any pasta dish.
It has a nice nuttiness and a kick of garlic, which is just what I want in my dinner.
To make this sauce, all you need is tahini (a sesame seed paste), lemon juice, water, and garlic.
Mix everything together in a small bowl until it gets thick and creamy.
You can also add olive oil if you want to make the sauce richer and creamier—just go slow when adding it so it doesn’t curdle up your sauce!
You can use this sauce as the base for almost any kind of pasta dish—it would be especially good with chickpea pasta because of its nutty taste!
But if you want to make this into an entire meal, try adding some cooked quinoa or farro (or whatever grain you like) to the mix before tossing with your pasta.
