But sometimes I need a little something extra to make it really pop.

I’m a big fan of salmon salad, and I know I’m not alone.
Salmon is a great source of protein, and it’s also affordable.
And it’s so versatile—you can do so many things with it!
You can grill it or bake it, or even pop it in the microwave if you’re in a rush.
And then there’s the dressing: what kind of dressing goes well with salmon salad?
The most common dressing for a salmon salad is a vinaigrette. Vinaigrettes are made with a mixture of vinegar and oil, which makes them lighter and less heavy than other dressings. They also tend to be more acidic than other dressings, which helps to cut through the richness of the fish.
Below I want to share with you 15 of my favorite ones that go especially well with this delicious meal:
I like to make my own ranch salad dressing because I have a tendency to buy the pre-made stuff, and it’s just not the same.
I love the tangy flavor of ranch dressing, but I don’t love all the additives and preservatives that come with it.
Making your own ranch dressing is easy, too:
Just combine buttermilk, sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice and salt in a bowl and mix well.
What could be easier than that?
French dressing is one of my go-to salad dressings.
It’s so simple to make that I almost always have the ingredients on hand.
The only reason I don’t make it more often is because I usually buy a bottle when I’m at the store and don’t want to waste any of it!
I like French dressing for two reasons:
- One, it’s delicious and goes with pretty much anything.
- Two, it’s easy to make and costs next to nothing.
Combine 1/4 cup vinegar (white or cider), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 tablespoon minced onion and 1 tablespoon oil in a jar with a lid and shake until combined.
This one adds so much flavor without being overpowering or heavy.
The best part about this blue cheese dressing recipe is that you can use any kind of vinegar you like—white wine vinegar is my personal favorite—so you can create different flavors every time you make it (and keep it interesting!).
Just combine all your ingredients in a bowl and stir until combined!
If you like honey mustard sauce on your sandwiches or salads, try making it yourself instead of buying it at the store.
All you need is honey (the darker the better), Dijon mustard and lemon juice.
Mix those ingredients together in a bowl until well combined.
The best part about this dressing is that you can adjust the amount of honey versus mustard to suit your tastes—just add more honey if you want it sweeter!
If you’re like me, you love the tangy flavor of Italian dressing.
Unfortunately, most of the premade versions of this dressing have a lot of extra ingredients that I don’t really want to put in my body.
So instead, I make my own!
It’s super easy: Just combine vinegar, garlic salt, oregano and pepper in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake well.
This dressing is perfect on a salmon salad because it has the right balance of flavors: spicy, creamy and tangy.
- To make it, combine one cup mayonnaise, two tablespoons ketchup, one tablespoon horseradish and 1/2 teaspoon each Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice.
- Blend until smooth.
- Pour into a bowl and add salt and pepper to taste.
If you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated, this balsamic vinaigrette is for you!
It’s perfect for summer salads—it’s light and refreshing, with just enough acidity to balance out whatever other ingredients you’re tossing into it.
To make this dressing, simply put together equal parts olive oil and balsamic vinegar in a bowl and season with salt and pepper to taste.
When I’m in the mood for something a little fruity, I love to make my raspberry vinaigrette.
This is super easy to make, and it’s also a great way to use up any extra raspberries you have lying around.
All you need are balsamic vinegar, raspberry jam or jelly, olive oil and salt. Combine all of those things in a bowl and whisk together until they form a thick sauce.
This recipe is so easy to make and tastes great on any type of salad!
All you need is some olive oil, lemon juice, parsley leaves (or another herb of your choice), garlic cloves and salt to make this delicious dressing.
It’s also really versatile; you can add more or less garlic depending on how much you like it!
A creamy cilantro lime dressing is one of my favorite dressings because it’s so fresh-tasting and light—and it pairs beautifully with salmon.
To make this dressing:
- Combine 1/2 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves (stems removed) and juice from 1 lime.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
I also love to use Asian-inspired dressings in my salmon salads.
I like to make my own sesame ginger dressing because it’s so easy to do, and you can customize it by adding more or less ginger depending on your preference.
Here’s how I make mine:
- Combine 1/4 cup rice vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger root, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and 2 tablespoons soy sauce in a small bowl.
- Whisk until well blended.
- To serve, drizzle over cooked salmon.
This one has just enough sweetness to offset the tanginess of some of my other favorite ingredients.
The poppy seeds add a nice crunch that pairs perfectly with soft greens like spinach or arugula.
For this recipe, you’ll need apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar), olive oil (or canola oil), honey or agave nectar and poppyseeds (or sesame seeds).
Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl until thoroughly combined; taste test before serving!
This one is not only delicious with salmon salads; it also pairs well with lots of other dishes like tuna steaks or chicken breast!
- To make this tasty vinaigrette at home, simply whisk together honey mustard dressing with soy sauce, orange juice concentrate and sesame oil until smooth.
- Then add in some fresh gingerroot and minced garlic cloves before serving over grilled salmon fillets or even as an Asian-inspired marinade for meatballs!
This dressing has been one of my favorites for years now because it’s so simple—you just combine avocado and cilantro in a blender or food processor until smooth (you can also do this by hand), then add lime juice and sea salt until you get the taste you want!
This makes for a great topping for any kind of salmon salad (or any other kind of salad).
15. Lemon Aioli
I love lemon aioli because it’s light and fresh, but also has a hint of sweetness from the honey mustard.
I like to use it whenever I’m serving fish or chicken, especially when they’re cooked on the grill or roasted in the oven.
To make this dressing, combine 2 tablespoons mayonnaise with 1 tablespoon sour cream and 1 tablespoon honey mustard sauce (you can buy this at any grocery store).
Mix well until smooth before adding salt and pepper to taste.
You can refrigerate the unused portion in an airtight container for up to two weeks—just shake well before each use!
