16 Herbs That Go with Lemon

Pairing herbs with lemon is different when you're a chef.
First, it's important to know what you want out of the pairing. Are you looking to create a burst of flavor in a dish that has been too dry? Are you trying to add an earthy element to a light cream sauce?
The answer will determine which herbs work best for your recipe.
Second, consider the food itself: Does the dish need other garnishes? How does the food react to heat and steam? For example, if you're adding lemon juice to shrimp or another kind of seafood, consider whether or not using citrus will make it tough or rubbery.
If so, use fresh herbs and lemon zest instead.
Third, if you're pairing herbs with lemon juice, consider whether or not those flavors will be cooked. When I'm adding fresh parsley and basil to a dish after it's been cooked and plated, I'll often add some drops of fresh lemon juice at the end.
This enhances the flavor of the herbs and gives them a more vibrant color—plus, it helps my guests feel like they're eating something more special than just plain pasta!
