Senator Joni Ernst mocks woman screaming people will die from Medicaid cuts then mentions tooth fairy in bizarre apology

A Republican senator’s sarcastic “apology” video has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa managed to turn a healthcare debate into something far more bizarre than anyone expected.

The Town Hall That Started It All

It all began during a Friday town hall meeting in Butler, Iowa, where Ernst was discussing Republican plans for healthcare spending cuts.

The Iowa Republican was explaining how the party would “protect” social services for the most vulnerable when tensions in the room began to rise.

Ernst suggested that people who work and have access to benefits elsewhere should “receive those benefits elsewhere” to leave taxpayer dollars for Medicaid-eligible individuals.

But not everyone in the audience was buying what she was selling.

When Things Got Heated

As Ernst continued her explanation, a woman in the back of the auditorium became visibly distressed.

The woman suddenly screamed out from her seat: “People are going to die!”

It was a moment that would have called for empathy and careful consideration from most politicians.

Instead, Ernst’s response would spark controversy across social media platforms.

The Response That Shocked Everyone

Rather than addressing the woman’s concerns about potential healthcare cuts, Ernst chose a different approach entirely.

She was jeered by the crowd after brushing aside what many saw as legitimate life-or-death concerns about Medicaid accessibility.

The moment quickly went viral, but Ernst wasn’t done yet.

The Stakes Behind The Debate

The current GOP-House passed spending bill could potentially affect millions of Americans’ access to healthcare if it passes the Senate.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned about the potential consequences during the bill’s debate:

“Children will get hurt. Women will get hurt. Older Americans who rely on Medicaid for nursing home care and for home care will get hurt. People with disabilities who rely on Medicaid to survive will get hurt.”

Jeffries added that hospitals and nursing homes could close, emphasizing: “That’s not hype. That’s not hyperbole. That’s not a hypothetical.”

Every Democrat in the House voted against the bill, while some Senate Republicans have pledged to make edits to the legislation.

The “Apology” That Made Things Worse

Instead of letting the controversy die down, Ernst decided to double down with a Saturday Instagram story that left viewers stunned.

Speaking in an obviously sarcastic tone, Ernst began: “Hello, everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize for a statement that I made yesterday at my town hall.”

But her “apology” took an unexpected turn that no one saw coming.

Ernst explained that she had made an “incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that, yes, we are all going to perish from this earth.”

Then came the bizarre twist: “So I apologize, and I’m really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well.”

The Iowa lawmaker concluded by encouraging viewers seeking “eternal and everlasting life” to “embrace” Jesus Christ.

The video has since sparked intense debate about political discourse and how elected officials should respond to constituents’ healthcare concerns, with many questioning whether Ernst’s approach was appropriate for such a serious topic.
