Their trademark violence includes murder, extortion, human trafficking, and drug distribution.
The gang’s influence isn’t confined to streets; it extends into Central America and tragically, even within the U.S. prison system.
Concerns Over Border Security Intensify
The alleged involvement of individuals who entered the country illegally adds another layer to the disturbing event.
Virginia Department of Corrections Director Chad Dotson didn’t mince words.
“Five of the individuals responsible for this senseless attack should never have been in this country in the first place,” Dotson stated.
His comments underscore ongoing debates and concerns regarding border security and the potential for violent individuals entering the United States.
Former President Trump’s administration notably increased enforcement actions targeting violent gang members, like those affiliated with MS-13 or Tren de Aragua, who entered illegally.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regularly reports hundreds of arrests and deportations of gang-affiliated individuals.

Director Dotson also highlighted the bravery of his staff.
“Every single day, our officers put their lives on the line to ensure public safety for the more than 8.8 million people across the Commonwealth,” he said.
“This attack is an example of the dangers they face when they show up to work every day. Our officers are heroes, and I commend the team at Wallens Ridge for their swift response.”

The Attack Unfolds
The coordinated assault happened suddenly on a Friday morning.
At approximately 9:45 a.m. inside Wallens Ridge State Prison, chaos erupted.
Officials confirmed that six inmates launched a violent attack, specifically targeting corrections officers.
The weapons used were crude but effective, leading to multiple stabbing injuries among the staff.
Attackers’ Identities Confirmed
Investigations quickly pointed to specific gang affiliations.
Five of the six inmates involved are confirmed members of the notorious MS-13 gang.
Crucially, state officials confirmed these five individuals, originally from El Salvador, were in the United States illegally.
Their presence in the prison stemmed from convictions for heinous crimes, including aggravated murder, first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and rape.
The sixth inmate involved is identified as a U.S. citizen and a confirmed member of another known gang, Sureño 13. He is currently serving a sentence for second-degree murder.
Officers Hospitalized After Violent Encounter
In the immediate aftermath, the focus shifted to the injured officers.
A total of five officers required medical treatment due to the attack.
Three have since been discharged from the hospital; this includes two officers who sustained minor injuries while bravely responding to the unfolding scene.
Two other officers remain hospitalized but are reported to be in stable condition.
The Virginia Department of Corrections stated the incident is under investigation, with no further details released at this time.
