Free Historic Cookbook: A Charming Collection from 1919 Chicago’s Eastern Star

Today, I’m excited to share a delightful piece of culinary history – the “Original Recipes of Good Things to Eat” from the Logan Square Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, published in 1919.

This community cookbook offers a fascinating glimpse into early 19th-century American home cooking and Chicago’s social history.

What makes this cookbook special is its comprehensive collection of tried-and-true recipes contributed by members of this Chicago women’s organization.

Spanning from soups to sandwiches, it includes over 20 different categories of recipes, complete with practical household hints and cooking time tables.

One of my favorite aspects is the charming “How to Cook Husbands” section – a witty piece of domestic humor that perfectly captures the era’s style.

The cookbook is filled with personal touches, with contributors’ names attached to their recipes, giving us a wonderful connection to these Chicago home cooks from over a century ago.
