Dolly Parton reveals husband Carl Dean ‘suffered a great deal’ before his death
Dolly Parton’s iconic 60-year romance with husband Carl Dean captured hearts worldwide.
But the country music legend recently opened up about the painful reality of his final days.
A Love Story Spanning Six Decades
Dolly Parton reflected on life without her beloved husband after their incredible 60-year journey together came to an end.
During a poignant appearance on “Today” in May 2025, the 79-year-old superstar shared how she’s navigating life after Dean’s passing in March at age 82.
Their love story began in Nashville back in 1964, at a Wishy Washy laundromat.
Parton was just 18, a budding star fresh off the bus, and Dean was 21.

They married two years later, in 1966, embarking on a partnership that lasted nearly six decades.
Despite Dolly’s global fame, Carl Dean famously remained out of the spotlight, a choice the couple cherished.
“My career being separate from my marriage is perfectly natural for us,” Parton told Country Music magazine in 1977. “We like it that way.”
Even on their 50th anniversary in 2016, Dean’s rare words underscored their deep connection.
“My first thought was, ‘I’m going to marry that girl,'” Dean told Entertainment Tonight. “My second thought was, ‘Lord, she’s good-looking.’ And that was the day my life began.”
Coping with an Unimaginable Loss
Appearing on “Today,” Parton became visibly emotional when discussing her late husband.
“Oh, you know what, I get very emotional when people bring it up,” she shared, tearing up.
“But we were together 60 years. I’ve loved him since I was 18 years old.”

She described the profound change his absence brings.
“It’s a big adjustment just trying to change patterns and habits,” Parton continued.

“I’ll do fine, and I’m very involved in my work and that’s been the best thing that could happen to me.”
“But I’ll always miss him, of course, and always love him. He was a great partner to me,” she added.
Overwhelmed by Global Support
The “Jolene” singer expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love she received following Dean’s death.
“I’m so thankful. I’ve gotten so many cards, letters, flowers, from all over the world,” Parton said.
With her characteristic humor, she added a touching remark about her famously private husband.
“I had no idea Carl Dean was so famous,” she joked.

This global connection was palpable during a recent event.
Parton recalled a touching, viral moment with a young fan during the opening-day parade at her Dollywood theme park on March 14.
A little boy appeared stunned and overjoyed spotting Dolly, who smiled and pointed back from her carriage.

“I remember him in the parade. I was thinking, ‘Honey, are you gonna have a heart attack right here in front of everybody?’” Parton said. “It was the sweetest thing.”
First Public Appearance Amidst Grief
That Dollywood parade marked Parton’s first public appearance after Dean passed away.
She surprised fans by attending the opening-day celebrations, which honored the theme park’s 40th anniversary.

Appearing amidst her personal grief was challenging, as she later admitted on “Today.”
“I got very emotional that day after the parade because there was just so much love like that,” she explained.
“Right after I had lost Carl and I was just so bottled up with emotion, and I got in the van and just boo-hooed for the longest time, just feeling all that love and emotion.”
A Heartfelt Tribute in Song
Just days after announcing Dean’s death, Parton shared a new song dedicated to him, titled “If You Hadn’t Been There.”
She posted it on Instagram on March 7 alongside a throwback photo.
“I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old,” she wrote.
“We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together,” the caption continued. “Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him.”
Parton first announced Dean’s passing with a heartfelt statement on March 3.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” she wrote. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
Just two weeks after his death, Parton opened up to Knox News about how she was carrying on.
“I’m doing better than I thought I would,” she shared candidly. “I’ve been with him 60 years. So, I’m going to have to relearn some of the things that we’ve done. But I’ll keep him always close.”
It was then she revealed a more difficult aspect of his passing.
“I’m at peace that he’s at peace,” the entertainer stated, before adding that her husband had **”suffered a great deal.”**
This admission sheds new light on the family’s experience leading up to his death.
“It’s a hole in my heart, you know,” Parton admitted, “but we’ll fill that up with good stuff and he’ll still always be with me.”
Through her openness and resilience, Dolly Parton continues to navigate this profound loss while keeping Carl Dean’s memory alive in her heart and music.
